The Perils of Website Design by Committee

When too many hands try to mold a website, the results can be disastrous. You start with good intentions. But then, it can spiral into chaos, filled with hurt feelings and opposing views. Giving too much power to a crowd can lead to delays that feel like an eternity. A seemingly simple request for feedback can quickly turn into a tangled mess.

The Feedback Spiral

You may set out with genuine intentions, eager to meet your deadline. You invest your time and energy into crafting what you’ve envisioned. However, when you share it with friends, things can go wrong. Someone might pass it to a cousin with “great” ideas about websites. Suddenly, you’re drowning in a torrent of feedback.

Each opinion adds layers of confusion. Here are some common critiques you might hear:

  • “This part doesn't sit right.”

  • “That color clashes.”

  • “I think it should be different.”

The odds of integrating all those suggestions while sticking to your timeline plummet. Designing by committee generally leads to delays or, worse, never launching at all.

Finding the Right Balance

So, does this mean you should keep everyone at arm's length during your design process? Not necessarily. A business partner has valuable insights, as they’re already invested in your vision and goals.

However, bringing in opinions from the masses means asking for feedback on a project they didn’t shape. This can be just as likely to stress you out as it is to provide value.

Trust Your Vision

Trust your gut. This website is your creation, a true reflection of your vision for your business.

If you feel the need for external opinions, save them for after the site is finished. Let reviewers focus on clarity and usability for any final adjustments, even after the site goes live.
