How to write a tagline for your business

You only have a very few seconds to catch your reader’s attention. The way to do that is by letting them know that they’ve found exactly what they were looking for.

Narrowing down your whole business into just a few phrases can seem a daunting task at first—but it doesn’t have to be! And know that completing this first step can make all the difference in how effective your site will be.

TIPS:

  • Don't get overwhelmed or try to think of the entire result at once. Instead, take it one step at a time – you'll combine them later.

  • Make sure you've identified your ideal client in detail before starting this exercise. Knowing your audience will help you speak to them in a familiar voice, encouraging them to stay and learn more.

  • A tagline is often a short phrase that conveys a feeling customers will remember, like Nike's "Just do it" slogan. But would someone seeing your brand for the first time understand what you offer if they didn't already know you? We'll provide more information on your website so they won't click away confused.

Get started by answering these questions:

  1. What do you do?

  2. Who do you serve?

  3. Where are you located? OR What locations are served?
Note that your business' physical location may not be vital to your business. (The internet has made the world a much smaller place! If the location doesn’t matter, leave this step out.)

  4. How are you different? OR What is the biggest benefit you bring?

  5. Put it all together!

Tagline example: Think big, shop small

PRO TIP
This does not need to be full sentences. In fact, the shorter the better!

INSTEAD OF :
‘We are a wedding venue in Boca Raton, FL’

JUST SAY:
‘Boca Raton, FL Wedding Venue’

Examples:
'Helping young authors self-publish books that get attention.'
'Easy menus using simple ingredients that your kids love. New recipes every Wednesday.'
